Cowdray Castle in evening light Cowdray Castle in the evening Family reunion celebrated at Cowdray every year. Picnickers near North St Car Park

Although you have to pay to enter, Cowdray Castle is a wonderful spot for a picnic with several tables provided right in front of the ruins.

Entry is at present £6 per adult and £3.50 for a child. A special fare is available for families. The Castle is open from mid March to end October.

The approach is via the Castle Causeway, 400 yards of broad sandy path, which starts at North St Car Park in Midhurst, crosses the River Rother, and joins the access road to the Castle.

This is a very special place. Ghost walks and full scale ghost hunts take place throughout the year. Cowdray has events in the season and plays host to the Madhurst Festival on August Bank Holiday along with the River Raft Race. At all other times Cowdray Castle is a picnic spot of special appeal. One family comes every year - its a reunion.

The Causeway edge near North Street also gets picnickers; but as there are lots of dogs using the Causeway its best to bring seats and a table. Travellers to the West Country often stop off here for a break.

The Cowdray Estate Road also has a bench with a fabulous view of the polo grounds and, in the distance, the South Downs. Depending on time available there are numerous alternatives to explore.

Highly recommended.
