The most romantic element of a picnic is often the element of surprise. Show up at your lover’s door with your picnic basket packed and ready to go in the car. Or pack your basket and place it at your chosen picnic location before meeting your date and then surprise them by letting them discover the basket.
Arrange a picnic in bed (think breakfast in bed if you like but supper might be more fun!) or lunch in the park, or a candlelight alfresco dinner after a bike ride – it’s the surprise element that gives it the romantic touch. Overall, you only need spend a small amount of money to get a huge amount of enjoyment from a picnic. It’s a great way to show how much you care. And it doesn’t always have to be in a scenic country setting. You can choose to have one in a city location too. How about on the roof of a building or car park with a nice view or on a private balcony? I’m sure you can come up with lots of romantic picnic ideas in terms of setting. Just remember the blanket, chairs or cushions as concrete can be solidly unromantic!
So too are wide open spaces. Lovers’ picnics should really take place in hidden recesses or private spaces. And if it rains, whip out your large umbrella and carry on! Many a romance has been signed and sealed in wet weather.Keep food simple, delicate and tasty. Use attractive disposable plates, cutlery and napkins and don’t forget a bin bag to throw it all into. How romantic is it to have to carefully pack away dirty dishes and scraps of food?! Combine the meal with a love letter – just a mini one – or a poem. Just a few sentences will do, conveying your feelings. Make it yourself, don’t just buy a card. You could write it on a napkin – even one sentence can convey strong feelings.
